Trader transfers $129 million to fraudster

2024-11-21 21:13:02
Based on the available information, the owner of a cryptocurrency wallet with the address "TGr…XAE" transferred $129 million in USDT stablecoins to a phishing address on the TRON blockchain. Before this, the user conducted a test transfer of 100 USDT, which was successful, convincing them of the operation's reliability. However, the subsequent large transaction turned out to be fraudulent. Experts believe that the theft occurred due to the substitution of the recipient's address. The phishing address "THc…bu8" was specifically designed to mimic the appearance of the address "TMS…bu8" using similar characters. After the funds were transferred to the scammer's wallet, they were moved to another address. It is assumed that the victim’s computer was infected with malware that replaces cryptocurrency addresses in the clipboard with those of attackers. Due to the similarity of characters, many users fail to notice the changes. What was unusual in this case is that the attacker voluntarily returned all the stolen funds. Within an hour of the large transaction, $116.7 million USDT was returned to the victim's account, and the remaining $12.96 million USDT was returned over the following few hours.
